Imam Hussain & His Sacrifices (True Story Of A Great Leader)

Imam Hussain & His Sacrifices

Imam Hussain was the second son of Hadrat Ali, son of Abu Talib and Fatima, daughter of Muhammad, the last messenger of Allah (Peace be upon them all).

He was born in Madinah in 625 AD, and 4th year of hijra, after his elder brother, Imam Hasan (PBUH) who was born in Ramadan, 3 hijri. The messenger put these names himself.

He grew elder in the eyes of prophet Muhammad (S) and learned from him all he could in Islamic teachings.
In 60 Hijri (22, april 680) Muawiya was died and made his son Yazeed heir apparent.
Yazeed was not eligible for that big post for he was a careless and a habitual drunkard man.

And, also, that nominating was against the Islamic teachings. This was the first effort of changing the process of selecting a new caliph.

So the wise men of that time raised their voices and agitate against this new tradition and refused to give oath of alligiance.

Abdurrahman son of Abu Bakr said to Utbah, the governor of Yazeed in Madinah, ‘’ Don’t tell a lie, this is the tradition of Qaisar and kisra, not Abubakr and Umar.

You have adopted their teachings instead of Islamic teachings. You have changed the caliphate into kingship.

Then, Imam Hussain refused to pledge allegiance to Yazeed along with Abdullah son of Umar, Abdurrahman son of Abu Bakr and Abdullah son of Zubair. But Yazeed knew very well what qualities Imam Hussain had. He targeted Imam Hussain only, and forced him to take bai’at. (pledge allegiance)

Yazeed sent Waleed son of Utbah to take him bai’at. But he was a kind hearted man. He called him and read the order of Yazeed. Imam Hussain asked him for some time to understand the whole matter and to take a right decision. He agreed.

As a consequence, he left Madinah, his hometown in 60th hijri on the advice of Muhammad son of Hanifah, with his whole family. He came down the valley of Abu Talib in Makkah.

Reaching there, Imam Hussain received some letters from the people of kufah, one of the big city of Iraq, they were requesting Imam Hussain to take the charge of kufah as a new caliph and they made sure him that they were all agree on his name to follow him.

After it, their elders came to Imam and requested him to go there with them for taking the charge. It seemed that the stage of his crowning would ready.

So, on the demand of kufiyans Imam Hussain started his journey towards kufah, thinking that all things would be right there. But on his way, the news of Muslims death came to him, and that he was killed by the governor of kufah, Ziyad . Soon He came to know, that kufiyans had cheated with him and left him alone to die.

At a place known as Dhi hashm Hur bin Yazeed Tamimi had stopped the caravan of Imam Hussain and said, ‘’ Ibn Ziyad sent me to arrest you.’’ Imam Hussain said, ‘’ I didn’t come here myself, but on the demand of Kufans I started my journey.’’ Hur listened nothing.

Then Imam Hussain delivered his historical speech. The words of that speech are witness of what Imam Hussain wanted.

“Oh people, the Messenger of God said: Whoever sees an aggressive tyrant that legalizes the forbidden of God, breeches divine laws, opposes the tradition of the Prophet, oppresses the worshippers of God, and does not concede his opposition to God in word or in deed, surely Allah will place that tyrant (in the Hell) where he deserves.”

O people be aware these kind of men who followed the Satan and spread the anarchy, chaos and corruption on the earth and distribute the money of exchequer amongst them. So I am the first who hate them. (Khawarazmi, Maqtal al-Husayn, vol.1, p. 234)

After that, At a desert, known as Karbala, his caravan was intercepted by the army of Hur , on the order of Yazeed, on 2nd muharram, 61 hijri.

On 7th of muharram, he had prevented from the water.

Imam Hussain delivered last speech on that last night and granted the permission to those people who wanted to go back their homes with their families. But nobody moved from there because there was none else his lovers.

Later on, the last talk had engaged between both sides on the night of 9th Muharram and it had failed as expected because it was impossible that Imam Hussain would surrender to Shami government and pledged allegiance, and Shami government would not ready to leave him without taking bai’at.(oath of pledge allegiance)

After that he set a small army consisted seventy-two soldiers, and gave the flag to Abbas. Having managed it, went to the door of who sees everything and everyone, who knows even what is deep in one’s conscience, and raised his hands saying,

“O God! You are my belief and my hope in every trouble .You had helped me in all circumstances. The heart became weak by sorrows and plans have lost their effects and the chances of success have fallen short, way of liberation has died, friends left alone, enemies abused, O God! You know I have left all I have and I returned to you because you are the helper of true and righteous.

Oh God! Surely you know that whatever we did was not a competition to gain worldly positions and not for the worthless physical attractions of the world.

But to show the signs of religious ways and to remove corruption from your lands, so that the oppressed feel secured and act according to your traditions and rules. (Ibn Shu’ba al-Harrani, Tuhaf al-‘Uqul, p. 239)

Then, in front of the army of Yazeed, consisted of four thousand soldiers, Imam had introduced himself, but the army had listened to nothing and the fight had started.

Most of the soldiers of Imam Hussain were killed till noon, and Imam Hussain became very tired, as he went forward towards furat to take water, Hussain son of Numair targeted his face with an arrow.

The face had injured. Dur’aa son of Shareek had cut the hands and finally Sinan son of Anas disjointed the neck. Wiki

It was the 10th of Muharram after 61 years of hijra and September of 681. All 72 lovers of Imam Hussain had drunk the glass of sweet death, Shahadat, with his hero. (Peace Be Upon Them) The history of al-Tabari page 1 to 150 (Tafseer e Tabari 375/7, Akhbarut Tival 372)
